South Mountain Vineyard

Boordy Vineyards  Frederick County, Burkittsville, Maryland USA

Union & Confederate armies clashed on these fields before their fateful encounter at Antietam in September 1862.

South Mountain Vineyard is located on the broad southeast shoulder of the Blue Ridge Mountains, which transect the state north-south eighty miles west of our Winery. The vineyards command spectacular views of the town of Burkittsville and surrounding farm country – a landscape that has remained largely unchanged since the Civil War. There are several qualities that make South Mountain Vineyard an exceptional site: diurnal temperature variations (cooler nights during the growing season), an extended growing season, and rocky well-drained soils of low fertility. The topography allows for good air drainage, minimizing damage from frosts. The long growing season is particularly favorable for the red varieties which require more time in the fall to reach optimal ripeness.
